Hello WAYO Members, Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to WAYO 2025! We’re thrilled about what’s shaping up to be a fun and exciting year. Below is everything you need to know to get started:

Rehearsals

First Rehearsal:

  • Date: Saturday, 15 February
  • Time: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM (arrive by 8:45 AM)
  • Location: Callaway Auditorium, UWA

Arrival Expectations:

  • Room opens 30 minutes before rehearsal.
  • Percussionists: Arrive by 8:15 AM (or earlier for complex setups).
  • Be warmed up, tuned, and ready to begin by 9:00 AM.

After Rehearsal:

  • Help pack away chairs and stands.
  • If leaving early, tidy up your chair/stand unless someone else is using it.

What to Bring:

  • Your instrument and accessories (e.g., double bass stools).
  • A 2B pencil for notes.
  • WAYO will provide music, stands and chairs.

Rehearsal Etiquette:

  • No Phones: Rehearsal rooms are a phone-free zone.
    • Phones may only be used for tuning at the start.
    • Emergencies: Inform the Operations Assistant if you need phone access.
    • Tacet Movements: If you’re not playing an entire movement, you may use your phone in the common room.
  • Parents, please drop off members at the door. Our staff can assist with tuning or setup if needed.
  • Respect the rehearsal spaces by keeping them tidy and following venue rules.

Attendance & Absences:

  • Running late or absent? Notify our Operations team as soon as possible:
  • Provide at least 24 hours’ notice when possible. Early notice helps us plan rehearsals efficiently.

For Wind, Brass, and Percussion Players:
We appreciate when wind, brass, or percussion players are unable to attend rehearsal (especially if you know in advance), if another member in the section is rostered off for a piece, that you ask that person to cover your part for rehearsal. Please also inform me that you have done so.

Concerts

WAYO has three main concerts this year:

  1. Season 1:
    • Dates: Sunday, 1 June, 5 PM & Monday 2 June, 5 PM
    • Venue: State Theatre Centre
    • Conductor: Jen Winley
    • Repertoire: Elfman Batman Suite, Gershwin An American in Paris, Mendelssohn A Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture, Bernstein Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.
    • Music Availability: Two of four pieces are available. Updates will follow.
  2. Season 2:
    • Dates:
      • Rehearsals start Monday 7 July
      • Performance on Sunday 13 July, 5pm
    • Venue: Winthrop Hall, UWA
    • Conductor: Max McBride
    • Repertoire: Lutoslawski Concerto for Orchestra, Dvorak Symphony No. 9 ‘From the New World’, Enescu, Romanian Rhapsody No.1
  3. Season 3:
    • Dates: Sunday 21 September, 5 PM & Monday 22 September, 7 PM
    • Venue: State Theatre Centre
    • Conductor: Peter Moore OAM
    • Repertoire: TBC

  • Mandurah Christmas Concert (December)
