On Saturday evening, the Darlington String Quartet joined forces with 19 talented string players from the WA Youth Orchestra for a powerful performance of Richard Strauss’ Metamorphosen for 23 Solo Strings. Presented in collaboration with the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), this special concert was the culmination of a week-long creative project that brought together students, professionals and educators in an extraordinary artistic experience.
Held in an intimate setting, the concert featured Strauss’ late masterwork — a hauntingly beautiful meditation on grief and transformation — delivered with nuance, emotional intensity, and remarkable cohesion by this intergenerational ensemble.
Also on the program was Schubert’s iconic String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, known as Death and the Maiden, performed by the Darlington String Quartet. Their interpretation of this monumental work captivated the audience with its drama, lyricism, and depth.
The project formed part of our WAYO NEXT initiative, which extends our mentoring network by partnering with WAAPA and the Darlington Quartet, WASO and UWA to enable our musicians to reach new heights in their musical skills and personal development.
Throughout the week, WAYO musicians rehearsed under the guidance of quartet members and WAAPA mentors, immersing themselves in the complex textures of Strauss’ chromaticism, dissonance, and counterpoint. The experience offered a rare chance to refine ensemble skills, deepen musical understanding, and connect with peers and professionals alike.
We extend our sincere thanks to WAAPA for their support and to the enthusiastic audience who embraced every note of this moving and memorable performance.
