With deep respect and gratitude, the West Australian Youth Orchestras mourns the passing of Mr Graham Wood OAM, MMus (WA), ALCM – violinist, educator, concertmaster, and conductor – whose influence shaped Western Australia’s musical life across more than six decades.

A co-founder of WAYO in 1974, Graham believed passionately in the importance of youth orchestras as training grounds and as places where young people could discover the joy of making music together. He was WAYO’s first Music Director, and remained closely connected to the organisation for many years, most recently as Vice Patron. His family’s involvement across generations reflects his enduring legacy.

Graham’s career was equally distinguished on the professional stage. After early study at the UWA Conservatorium of Music, he performed in Britain with the Covent Garden Orchestra and the London Philharmonic before returning home to join the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, where he served as Associate Concertmaster for 24 years. A devoted teacher and mentor, he inspired many violinists through his private teaching, his work with WASO, and through decades of involvement with the Australian Music Examinations Board.

His contribution to youth music extended nationally: he directed the Australian Youth Orchestra’s National Music Camp program, was made an AYO Life Member, and gave generously of his time as a tutor, examiner, and advisor. The AUSTA National Graham Wood OAM Award for advanced diploma strings students stands as testament to his impact on future generations.

Remembered for his artistry, integrity, and sense of humour, Graham Wood’s legacy is written into the fabric of Western Australia’s cultural life. WAYO, and indeed the broader musical community, owes him a profound debt of gratitude. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Tricia, son and daughter, and their extended family, alongside all who were privileged to know and learn from him.
