About the Babies Proms
The Babies Proms concerts were devised for the Western Australian Youth Orchestra by then Musical Director Richard Gill in conjunction with current Musical Director Peter Moore. Constructed and individually tailored to introduce young people to the instruments of the orchestra in a fun and interactive way, the concept is now in use by many orchestras throughout Australia (including the Sydney Symphony) and internationally (through the Singapore Symphony Orchestra).
Taking place on selected weekends each year, the Babies Proms are some of our most popular and fastest-selling events. Every weekend performance is a freshly written show targeted towards 2 – 6 year olds. The concerts introduce children to exciting orchestral repertoire through interactive storytelling, musical movement, games and audience participation. The performances are informative for parents as well who may be considering introducing music into their child’s education. In fact, a large percentage of current WA Youth Orchestra members had their start as attendees of the Babies Proms when they were young!
About the Peter and the Wolf
WA Youth Orchestras have a long-standing tradition of mounting annual performances of Prokofiev’s classic work for children, Peter & the Wolf. This symphonic fairy tale for children was commissioned and designed to introduce children to the individual instruments of the orchestra in a vibrant and creative setting. With the help of a narrator, the orchestra musically illustrates the characters in the story, personifying them through the magic of instrumentation.
The story is about a boy named Peter who lives with his grandfather. Grandfather does not want Peter going out of their garden because there are wolves around, but one day Peter defies him and goes on an adventure beyond the garden gate. Along the way Peter meets some wonderful animals: a bird, a duck, and a cat, but unbeknownst to him there is a wolf lurking in the shadows. Will all the animals get along? What will happen when Peter discovers the wolf? In a mere four days Prokofiev created one of the most lasting and beloved symphonic works of all time – WAYO invites you to witness this enchanting work and hear the difference an orchestra can make to story-time.
Kids Concerts FAQ
How many tickets do I need to buy? Does my baby need a ticket?
Tickets are sold at a $16 per seat price for adults and children. The Babies Proms concerts are catered towards children aged 2 – 8, but we often get babies and older brothers and sisters join in the fun. Our policy is that children under 2 are free provided they sit on your lap for the duration of the show. You will be asked during the booking process ‘How many under 2s are in your group that do not require a seat’. Please enter the number – note it will appear on your booking but you will not be allocated a ticket for the under 2. If you’d like a seat for your infant, simply purchase an Adult / Child seat. As shows usually sell out, there will not be any spare seats available for infants that have not purchased a seat ticket.
Will tickets also be available for sale at the door?
Tickets will be available for sale at the door unless sold out prior. We find that our children’s concerts are extremely popular and will sell out, so it is usually unlikely that there are still tickets left on concert day. However, the sessions available above will be updated to reflect ticket availability.
What does unreserved seating mean?
You are not allocated a specific seat number when you purchase your ticket. On the concert day once doors open (approx. 15 minutes before the concert starts) you can sit in any seats you like. The Richard Gill Auditorium offers a fantastic view of the orchestra from all seats due to its semicircular design and raked seating.
How do I get my tickets?
Tickets will be emailed to the address provided during the purchasing process. You can download these tickets and print them, or you can access them from the Eventbrite App which is available at the Apple App Store or Google Play.
Are there any additional or processing fees?
No! Tickets are simply $16 per seat, and we’ll cover the booking fees!
Can I refund or exchange my tickets?
Tickets are non-refundable with exchanges issued at the discretion of WAYO staff, only in the most extreme of circumstances and only in the event there are tickets remaining for that season and exchanged tickets can be resold. Tickets cannot be exchanged for any other WAYO concerts or a future WAYO children’s concert season. Please note, tickets cannot be exchanged to or from a sold out show.
