The Western Australian Youth Orchestra (WAYO) is the Association’s premier ensemble. Recognised as one of the finest youth orchestras in Australia, it features some of the state’s most talented young musicians.
The Western Australian Youth Orchestra (WAYO) is the flagship ensemble of the Association and is recognised as one of the finest youth orchestras in Australia. Since being founded in 1974, WAYO alumni now occupy significant positions in every major orchestra in Australia. With up to 100 players, WAYO is able to perform the finest in large-scale symphonic works. Under the Musical Direction of Peter Moore OAM, 2023 will see WAYO perform some of the greatest large-scale repertoire ever written for orchestra in an ambitious and highly rewarding atmosphere; conductors will include Peter Moore OAM, Johannes Fritzch & Jon Tooby. As part of a landmark partnership supported by Woodside, a significant number of WAYO members will be also invited to perform side-by-side with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) with conductor Umberto Clerici.
In 2022, a busy concert schedule included three blockbuster performances at the Perth Concert Hall with conductors Peter Moore OAM, Jen Winley and touring international conductor, Maestro Tze Law Chan. In recent years WAYO has also presented special Children’s Concerts, Christmas Concerts and collaborations with Perth Festival, West Australian Opera, Co3, WA Youth Theatre, Awesome Festival, and various independent artists of international standing. If you are passionate about music, this is sure to be a fulfilling and rewarding orchestral experience.
See the Western Australian Youth Orchestra in action below performing at Perth Concert Hall to no audience on Saturday 18 July 2020, and again on 30 May 2021 with special guest artists.
“WAYO has been a great learning experience for me as it helps build an understanding of orchestral playing and repertoire. It is also a great way to meet new friends – I’ve met some of my closest friends through the orchestra…”
